BUILT AT SALT CREEK THE NAME COMES BACK NEW

Orange County, 1981. Quiet for forty years. Built new for those who never forgot — and those just now finding out.

01 — The Story

The Original Built New

Sunbreaker is a new company built around an old name. To use this brand well, you have to understand what it stands for — because every color, word, and image is in service of one feeling: belonging to a place.

There’s a moment in every culture when the thing that made it real becomes the thing that’s most missing. Surfing reached that moment quietly — somewhere between the sale of one surf giant to private equity and the day another collapsed under a corporate empire. The soul left the building.

The 50-to-70-year-old recognizes the name. The 22-year-old has never felt anything like it.

In 1981 a small surf brand called Sunbreaker started in Orange County. Before long it was on some of the best surfers on this coast. My brother Steve ran with that crew, and I still have his hat.

The brand went quiet decades ago and the name was let go.

Forty plus years later I built a new company around that name. Steve’s hat sat on my desk the whole time. Same name, same water, same stretch of coast — new hands.

Sunbreaker Surfwear LLC is a new California company. It isn’t affiliated with or a successor to the original Sunbreaker. What carries over is the name, the place, and the reason it mattered.

The promise

A surf brand isn’t a product. It’s a relationship.
